How to see Bioluminescence:

Bioluminescence looks different throughout the year.  The photos you see of it must be taken at the height of the season, in perfect conditions (mid – late summer, new moon).  It is harder to see when a full moon is shining on the water.

On your tour, the bioluminescence may range from sparks and greenish light in the water, to flashing comb jellies in winter.  If you want to paddle in bioluminescence that looks like the photos, it is best to come in the height of the season.

BK Adventure does not guarantee any type of wildlife at any time as that would be impossible to do, but we do try to keep you updated in conditions.  Please see our trip updates on Twitter.

There are 2 types of Bioluminescence Tours in Florida

Bioluminescent Plankton (Dinoflagellates) – This type of bioluminescence covers the water so it glows an other-worldly blue or green color when your paddle, hands or kayak disturb it.   If you pick it up and play with it, it will create sparkles on your hands and arms.  Your guide will show you how to kayak at night.  It is important to go with a guide who knows the area, as the best times to go are on low moon shine nights.

Here are the best times to do Bioluminescent Night Tours

Summer May – Nov – The water heats up and the bioluminescent plankton (dinoflagellates) start to glow.   This is especially amazing in our Clear Kayaks!

Autumn/Winter Nov – Mar – This is Comb Jelly weather.  In certain areas where we kayak, the water will cool down and bring out the glowing comb jellies!

One of the best times to see bioluminescence is during the 4 days preceding or after a new moon.  Here are the 2021 new moon dates:

Jan. 1, Feb. 11, Mar. 13, Apr. 11, May 11, Jun 10, Jul 9, Aug 8, Sep 6, Oct. 6., Nov. 4, Dec. 4

Remember – You don’t need to come on the exact day of the new moon, a few days before or after is also great.  Can’t come on new moon week, check for moon rising times.  If it rises late at night, it will not likely shine on the water during your tour.  Even if it does, in summer, bioluminescence is super bright every night.  And the Super Moons can be really beautiful!

What Makes BK Adventure’s Florida Tours So Special

BK Adventure is dedicated to helping Florida locals and our state’s guest see the best of Florida Wildlife.  We offer more tours to see bioluminescence than any other company.  But that’s not all… we also do daily tours to dolphins and manatees, we offer several biking tours near Orlando and Titusville, and seasonal we do tours in the amazing Florida springs!

Our guides go through rigorous training to first learn guiding and rescue safety, and then to learn about the wonders of Florida wildlife.

Things To Do Other Than Theme Parks

We believe that there are better things to do Florida than theme parks… especially in nature! Our motto and branded hashtag is #GetOutsideFL.

Seeing bioluminescent plants and sea life in nature is much more amazing than seeing them at a theme park attraction – don’t you agree!  How about seeing a dolphin glide through glowing water and light itself all up like a mystical creature in the lagoon? Yep – way more breathtaking than a staged aquarium show!  We see all this on our tours, and you can too.

We look forward to all of your questions about Florida wildlife and outdoor adventure.  Ask our guides or staff about things you can do in Florida nature near you!

Bioluminescence Tours Update

New for Summer 2020 – Our tours will be small groups of 4 tandem boats (8 people) with 1 guide.  Kayaks remain at least 6 feet apart (the length of the kayak paddle, plus boat makes this a natural distance).  All equipment has been thoroughly disinfected before each tour.
