Minnesota boy, 9, bitten by shark while body surfing in Florida

MIAMI BEACH, Florida — A 9-year-old boy from Minnesota is recovering in the hospital after he was bitten in the shoulder by shark, reports say.

“I was holding his hand the whole time and he was kind of body surfing a little bit and he had fallen on his stomach,” said Kristine Weiskopf, the mother of 9-year-old Jay, according to the Associated Press. “He just said, ‘Ow,’ and I looked down and there was about a 4-foot gray shark just kind of swimming away, so I just scooped him up and ran him up the beach.”

Weiskopf tells CBS Miami that when she pulled Jay from the water, there was a large chunk missing from his shoulder. Jay needed surgery to close the wound.

The family, which includes Jay’s father, Ren, was only about 10 minutes into their vacation when the incident occurred, Weiskopf tells KARE Channel 11. Now she says her son only wishes to return home to Eagan, Minn.

KARE reports Jay is expected to make a full recovery but it will take time. The bite tore muscles and tendons. He should be discharged from the hospital today.

“Not the vacation we were planning,” Weiskopf said. “I was worried about traveling with COVID and COVID is terrible too, but this is just every parent’s worst nightmare and it’s something you would expect to happen to somebody else, not to you.”
