Hobie Mirage Compass Kayak with MirageDrive 180 Review: All-Around Performer

Hobie Mirage Compass Kayak with MirageDrive 180 Review: All-Around Performer

Let’s take a closer look at the Hobie Mirage Compass in this kayak review.
Ideal Application: A very capable, all-around performer that is lighter weight for those that car-top or who need a lighter performance hull, in a package that makes it easier to launch at challenging locations. Affordability (for a Hobie) is made possible via a more basic outfitting of the interior – which allows users to add just the features they need for specific applications.

Overview: The Compass is the have-it-your-way kayak in the Hobie lineup. At 12’ long, the Compass is a fast, very good tracking hull that can handle all waters in reasonable conditions, and the 34” width provides ample stand-up capability. A retractable rudder and built-in tracking skeg allow for precise maneuvering while paddling – or while under power from the acclaimed Mirage Drive 180 with Kick-Up Fins. The renowned Vantage CT seat is adjustable for angle of recline and height, and removable to use as a shore chair.

The interior is basic, fitted with a mesh-covered, bow storage area, dual H-Track accessory rails, starboard cupholder and a port steering handle, recessed carry handles and an 8” Twist-and-Seal Hatch in front of the seat. Two rod holders complement either side of the spacious rear tank, which is well appointed with tie downs and a bungee system. A multitude of Hobie upgrade options allow this platform to be customized to your exact fishing needs – so you only pay for what you want.

Notable: Hobie offers more useful accessory solutions than any other kayak manufacturer, and most all can be installed on the Compass. Popular upgrades include a larger rectangular center hatch (which allows the included round center hatch to be installed in the bow); hookless map pockets added below the H-Tracks; an H-Bar standing support that folds down when not in use; H-Rails; Hobie Livewell or H-Crate; and drop-in rod holder extensions to name a few. At $2,349 – you get Mirage Drive 18O power and a platform that can be tailored to your exact needs.
